Title of Piece:

VirtuPuppet: An Implementation of a Gesture-Based Musical Interface with Control Intimacy

Description:

Gesture-based interfaces provide possibilities for new modes of musical expression not afforded by traditional instruments. Unfortunately, many of these new platforms do not preserve the same, tight, physical link between the performer’s actions and the resulting sound found in their established counterparts. This has consequences for the design of such interfaces should they re quire similar levels of musical control intimacy. This installation features an interface that seeks to achieve a high level of musical control through a tight coupling of user action and system response. The presented system employs the Nintendo Wii controller to track users’ hand movements. These tracked movements are used to generate audio content in Max/MSP and visual content in Processing 1.0.

Users' hand movements allow interaction with a puppet which is used to generate audiovisual content
