Numinous – moses and the burning bush is written for S.S.A.A.T.T.B.B. choir, violin, cello and electronics. ‘Numinous’ comes from the Latin word ‘numen’ and is often used to refer to the human emotive response to the presence of God. Emotional responses to music have been investigated philosophically, neurologically and psychologically. In this piece it is the psychological theory of expectation and emotional response in musical structure that is explored. When listening to music, expectations of what will occur within a piece are formed due to previous experiences of musical styles. If the expectation is not met we may feel surprise and hence an emotional reaction. Numinous explores the formation, deviation and resolution of expectations in music and the subsequent emotional responses, according to a cognitive theory of music perception.
Beauty, light, reflection - the numinous.
